Fabrice Amedeo, departure for the Vendée-Arctique-Les Sables d'Olonne the day after the World Day without Plastic Waste

Friday July 3 is World Plastic Waste Day. On the eve of Fabrice Amedeo's departure for the Vendée-Arctique-Les Sables d'Olonne, our commitment to the yachtsman takes on its full meaning.

Beyond competition, towards ecology

As part of his ecological approach, the skipper is sailing a rather unusual Imoca...
Fabrice Amedeo has equipped his monohull with innovative new sensors to help scientific institutes such as IFREMER collect a wealth of data on ocean quality. Onet is supporting the skipper's scientific project as a partner.

The newly renovated boat will pump seawater through its keel before passing through three 300, 100 and 30 micron filters to trap microplastics. The aim is to determine the state of marine pollution in our oceans. Beyond the competition, it's a real scientific expedition that's being prepared with the aim of raising the awareness of as many people as possible.

Sailing for science

"I'm going to be dedicated to something other than competition, so it's true that there's an impact, but I find it really worthwhile," confides the sportsman. The research will enable precise advances to be made in this field.

In particular, the researchers hope to learn more about the areas where particles from the degradation of the eight million tonnes of plastic that end up in the ocean every year are concentrated. The aim will then be to identify the main categories of plastic in order to better quantify them. To encourage this approach, the Unesco Intergovernmental Oceanic Commission and the Imoca association signed a partnership agreement in January to promote ocean sciences.

" I think it's great to start the microplastics mission on this route, which will enable us to take very northern measurements. It's a great first with the new sensor. The race is a great dress rehearsal for the Vendée Globe, both in terms of the scientific and sporting aspects ," says Fabrice.

Onet: concrete actions in favor of the environment

For over 2 years, Onet has been committed to limiting the consumption of resources, while guaranteeing the same level of quality in all its branches for its core business: traditional cleaning services. With Biogistic, Onet saves 20 tonnes of plastic a year, representing a 30% reduction in waste.

Upstream, the solution consists of using ultra-concentrated products to optimize the quantities of plastic delivered to our branch warehouses, since 3 x 25L cans generate over 20,000L of active solution.
Downstream, a simple principle of reusing and refilling empty bottles instead of throwing them away. To make this possible, a controlled dilution solution combined with ultra-concentrated products is used in all our branches and on our larger sites.
