Sometimes I feel like my qualifications aren’t enough, or that I don’t really know what recruiters are looking for in me.
However, in most cases, the difference isn’t solely about the level of experience. It depends mainly on how I present my background, my motivation, and my career goals.
In this guide, I’ll learn how to optimize my application to maximize my chances of being contacted, thanks to advice from Léa Mainguy, HR Manager at Onet Cleaning and Associated Services.
My resume is my first point of contact with the recruiter.
To capture a recruiter’s attention, I need to show that my application is directly relevant to the position.
This depends largely on the choice of words I use. Repeating certain terms from the job posting helps demonstrate that I understand the requirements. It’s also a good way to make my profile more readable, especially when applications are screened quickly. Beyond the words, I must above all highlight the most relevant experiences. Even if I’m just starting out, I can highlight school projects, internships, volunteer work, or student jobs. What matters isn’t just what I’ve done, but what I’ve gained from it.
Whenever possible, I try to be specific. Giving a specific example or a result helps make my profile more credible and memorable.
You might think that a creative resume would grab more attention. In reality, a resume that’s too complex can quickly confuse the recruiter. Readability remains the top priority. A well-structured document, with information organized logically, allows someone to understand my background in just a few seconds.
I therefore make sure to present my work experience and education in a clear order, with dates clearly visible. A simple, clean, and consistent design is often more effective than a highly graphic template.
The goal is not to make a visual impression, but to make the document easy to read. A recruiter should be able to quickly identify important information without effort.
Today, my application goes beyond my resume.
In most cases, recruiters will look to learn more about me by checking my LinkedIn profile.
That’s why it’s important for my profile to be up-to-date and consistent with my resume. My background, experiences, and skills should all tell the same story.
LinkedIn also offers an opportunity to go the extra mile. I can use it to share projects, achievements, or interests that showcase my personality and commitment. Even with limited experience, this helps make my profile stand out and sets me apart.
The cover letter is sometimes seen as secondary. However, it remains a good way to convey what my resume doesn’t show. In particular, it allows meto explain why I’m interested in a position or a company, and what I hope to learn from this experience.
Rather than repeating my resume, I should provide additional information. For example, by explaining my career goals, my motivations, or the reasons why I’m applying.
A generic letter, sent to multiple companies without any customization, is easily identifiable. Conversely, a personalized letter, even a simple one, demonstrates my commitment.
Beyond each individual element, what makes an application strong is its overall consistency.
My resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile must be aligned. They must tell the same story, with a clear logic in my career path and my choices.
Even if my career plan isn’t fully defined yet, I must be able to explain what I’m looking for and why. This consistency reassures the recruiter and gives meaning to my application.
Key takeaways:
- A recruiter spends only two minutes on the first read of a resume: I need to get straight to the point!
- The priority: to be understood quickly.
- LinkedIn is a professional platform open to everyone.
- A good cover letter complements the resume; it doesn't just repeat it.
- A consistent application is more credible.
A simple, clear, and focused application
A successful application doesn’t mean having a flawless background or extensive experience.
Above all, it means being able to present your profile in a clear, structured, and sincere way.
By taking the time to tailor my materials, highlight my experience, and polish my presentation, I’m giving myself the best possible chance of success.
A well-crafted application, even a simple one, can really make a difference.
