Strongly committed to the preservation of the oceans, skipper Fabrice Amedeo works both at sea and on land. As a partner in his scientific and educational project, Onet is very proud to support his commitments on the eve of the Route du Rhum.
Fabrice Amedeo takes the start of the race with two new features on board: the first, a recycled plastic sail specially made for an Imoca, and the second, the installation of a new ADNe sensor.
Two innovations that will help minimize the environmental impact of the project and map marine biodiversity.

A recycled sailcloth and an eDNA sensor for the start of the Route du Rhum 2022: Fabrice Amedeo's new commitments
In order to limit the carbon footprint of his sporting project as much as possible, and to sail in total harmony with his commitments, Fabrice Amedeo will start the Route du Rhum 2022 with a 180m2 sail, specially designed for downwind sailing in recycled plastic.
This is a world first for the Imoca of our navigator, who is determined to go even further in his commitment to safeguarding biodiversity and the health of the oceans.
The skipper had already equipped his boat with two solar panels and a wind turbine to generate as much renewable energy as possible.
Fabrice Amedeo is multiplying his initiatives by installing on board a new ADNe sensor capable of measuring the impact of climate change on marine biodiversity and assessing the migration or appearance of new species: a world first.
What is eDNA?
" Environmental DNA is all the DNA permanently released by organisms into their natural environment through excretions (mucus, larvae) and secretions (faeces or urine). Today, we are able to filter 1L of seawater and rapidly obtain, at reasonable cost, a precise biological map of all the organisms present in this environment, from viruses to whales. This approach is revolutionary in that it enables us to identify the presence or absence of rare or endangered species, as well as invasive species and other pathogens. Taking an inventory of living organisms enables us to measure the health of our oceans in near-real time, and thus to understand the dynamics of climate change," explains Xavier Pochon, a researcher specializing in molecular monitoring and Associate Professor of Marine Biology at theUniversity of Auckland.
This umpteenth effort to strike a balance between sporting performance, energy efficiency and civic responsibility makes us proud of the Onet x Fabrice Amedeo partnership.
A sentiment shared by the Group's employees and customers, who have been able to benefit from numerous activations since the beginning of the partnership, notably at the start of the Transat Jacques Vabre in 2021 and soon at the start of the Route du Rhum, where numerous highlights are planned. On the eve of the start of the Vendée Arctique Les Sables d'Olonne, the most committed employees also wanted to clean the skipper's boat before he set off.
Onet x Fabrice Amedeo, a lasting partnership
Fabrice Amedeo, with the support of the Onet Group, is developing a scientific project by installing oceanographic sensors on board his boat. During the various races, theImoca measures salinity, CO2 content, microplastic levels and ocean surface temperature .
The data collected is then communicated by the project's scientific partners: UNESCO, OceanOPS,IFREMER, GEOMAR and the Max Planck Institut, before being made available to the international scientific community as open data via the SOCAT database.
All these indicators are essential for a better understanding of climate change.
2019On the occasion of the release of the educational booklet " Cétacé, l'Océan boit la tasse ", a resource tool for teachers and parents aimed at children from CM1 to 5ème. Fabrice Amedeo, the man behind the booklet, came to present it to 7 classes of employees' children, to raise their awareness of ocean preservation.
2020Onet x Fabrice Amedeo joins the Cercle des Nageurs de Marseille's initiative to clean up the Baie des Catalans. An annual event in which the Onet group mobilizes its employees on a local scale to carry out a collective initiative for the environment.
It's the start of land-based actions for our navigator, who will be duplicating the operation in the company of our employees from the Ouest-Atlantique regional office on the Paracou beach at the start of the Vendée Arctique Les Sables d'Olonne.
2021Fabrice Amedeo is keen to expand his ambitious, collective project even further.
With the creation of the #OceanCalling endowment fund, Emilie de Lombarès, Chairman of the Board, joins the committee of patrons to go further in sharing our values.
On this occasion, the yachtsman announced live from Onet Group headquarters at a phygital press conference the results of the first analyses from samples taken during the 2019 - 2022 Vendée Globe.
These results show that the surface waters of the Atlantic Ocean are twice as polluted by cellulose fibers as by microplastics.
2022All sails set for the Route du Rhum
Fabrice Amedeo is taking part in this transatlantic race for the4th time. This year marks a turning point in his sporting objectives, with a boat recently fitted with large C foils, which he was able to test during the Défi Azimut. Beyond his ambitions as a competitor, taking part in this legendary race will enable him to continue collecting valuable data on ocean pollution for the scientific community.
Fabrice Amedeo explains the interest of this project in an interview with Le Figaro last September.
For scientists, we're a boat of opportunity: we're not a scientific boat, but a racing boat that sails on routes little or not used by scientific boats, and therefore provides a wealth of additional information on the state of our oceans.
As part of our Onet x Fabrice Amedeo partnership, Onet employees and their families are expected to visit the Route du Rhum village throughout the 12 days leading up to the start on Sunday, November 6. Many of them will be on the pontoon to share their support and wish a fair wind to our navigator committed to preserving the oceans.
