European Week for Sustainable Development: Top 10 actions implemented within the Onet Group

From September 20 to 26, the European Week for Sustainable Development (EWSSD) is taking place. Its aim is to promote the ecological transition by highlighting local actions and raising public awareness of sustainable development. Actions by registered participants began on September 18 and will continue until October 8, 2022.

An opportunity to take stock of the concrete actions we take on a daily basis.

European Week for Sustainable Development 2022

Understanding the impact of microplastics on the oceans

Our desire to protect biodiversity led us to support skipper Fabrice Amedeo in his personal commitment. We felt it was important to contribute, in our own way, to the work of the scientific community in understanding the impact of ocean pollution on the climate and the planet.

Since 2020, we've been financing a sensor on board the navigator's boat to collect data on water salinity, Co2 levels and microplastic and phytoplankton content.

These data are unprecedented in scope, as they are collected offshore where scientific vessels rarely pass.

In parallel with this mission, we carry out a number of awareness-raising and sea preservation initiatives alongside the sportsman every year. Fabrice Amedeo went to meet 217 schoolchildren in Marseilles to share his experience of the scientific reality with which he is confronted. We also organized beach clean-up days with a number of Group employee volunteers.

Reducing the use of plastics

Committed to people and the environment, it was essential for us to introduce an innovation that would profoundly change our cleaning services.

Deployed 4 years ago, Biogistic is our solution for improving the health of our employees in the workplace, reducing our carbon footprint and improving the performance of our services.

This approach is fully in line with a circular economy approach, the aim of which is to limit resource consumption while maintaining the same level of quality and putting the individual at the heart of the system. Ultra-concentrated products are diluted in agencies or on customer sites. Containers are reused to reduce plastic waste. This also contributes to reducing journeys and limiting ourCO2 emissions, as the volume of containers transported is reduced.

By December 2021, 88% of our services carried out over the year had benefited from this global responsible cleaning offer. Thanks to this solution, we have reduced plastic waste by 30%, saving 20 tonnes of plastic per year!

Collecting and recycling glass

Over the last ten years, we have risen to 4th place in the Spanish glass collection and recycling market, with 26,000 tonnes processed in 2020 and a target of 33,000 tonnes in 2022. Attitudes are changing, and so isOnet Iberia 's business.

In Spain, the selective sorting of glass, deployed since 2010, has gone from strength to strength. The 26,000 tonnes collected in 2020 (+11%) earned us the title of Recycler of the Year, awarded by our customer Ecovidrio, the Spanish glass market manager.

Handling our electrical and electronic waste

In November 2017, we signed a partnership with eco-organization Ecosystem covering the collection of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). This partnership contributes to the development of mass collection, a vector of environmental, economic and social performance.

In 2021, 33.5 tonnes of waste were collected. Since the start of the program, a total of 179 tonnes of cleaning materials have been recycled by our partner, and 194 items have been collected directly from our branches.

Giving a second life to our IT equipment

Since 2017, Olinn, an adapted company employing people with disabilities, has been working with us to manage the recycling and reuse of our waste electrical and electronic equipment.

Deployed across the Group's 350 branches in France, this solution enables each region to organize its own equipment collection.

This year, 19 abductions were recorded nationwide.

A total of 666 PCs and laptops were processed, 41% of which were resold on the second-hand market to find new buyers.

As a result, 2.6 tonnes of equipment have had their life extended.

Opting for more sustainable mobility

For several years now, we have been working to make our vehicle fleet greener. With this in mind, we have introduced a wide range of electric and hybrid vehicles to our vehicle catalog.

We have also created a dedicated and attractive scheme to encourage our employees who use company cars to switch to electric power, by paying for the installation of a reinforced socket at their home.

In 2021, we are committed to renewing our vehicle fleet. We have ordered 13.6% electric and hybrid vehicles. This figure exceeds government targets, as we have already reached the objectives set by the LOM law a year ahead of schedule.

In addition to clean vehicles, 60 recharging points have been installed to enable employees, partners and customers to recharge their personal and business vehicles. To date, 15 branches are already equipped with electric charging stations.

Protecting the world around us

An essential link in the protection of our biodiversity, bees play a major role in the balance of the ecosystems that surround us.

Without bees, pollination of flowers and plants is greatly reduced. Without pollination, fruit and vegetable production is jeopardized.

This simple observation led us, 7 years ago already, to want to protect bees and thus participate in safeguarding our environment and our balance of life.

To this end, in December 2015, 21 beehives were installed at our headquarters in Marseille. Last June, we harvested a new crop of honey.

In this way, we raise awareness among our employees of the need to protect bees, and introduce them to the profession of beekeeper.

A total of 110 kg was collected!

Bringing nature back to the heart of cities

A child can save a tree

Through our branches in Metz and Dijon, as well as our Eastern France Regional Division, we support the association "Un enfant peut sauver un arbre" (A child can save a tree), which defends the environment and biodiversity.

Primarily involved in the defense of forests, the association's current challenge is to enhance the integration of trees in the city.

We also run awareness-raising campaigns for school groups. For example, we are involved in the planting of 15 to 20 feeder trees, mainly chestnut or fruit trees, and in the rehabilitation of the Couternon pond near Dijon, enabling amphibians to regain their habitat.

Promoting low-carbon solutions

Our mission is to find the right solutions for our customers, our employees and the planet. Our teams atOnet Cleaning and Associated Services teams have integrated this into their green space management offer.

28 donkeys, 13 horses and 7 ponies have joined the Metz teams for eco-pasturing missions. They work on the 33 hectares of our customer Stellantis' vast site. The main advantage of this solution is the absence ofCO2 emissions and phytosanitary products.

We've been using eco-pasture for many years because, in addition to its environmental virtues, it can sometimes be implemented in areas where the topography does not allow the use of mowers.

Preserving and pooling resources

Responsible behavior on the road also means preserving resources.

Committed for many years to thinking about and improving mobility, we have set up a number of initiatives:

  • the provision of shuttles, buses and the promotion of carpooling;
  • to ensure the well-being and safety of our teams during their journeys, while reducing CO2 emissions.

To this end, and to reduce our employees' carbon footprint and fossil fuel consumption, in 2019 we turned to France's leader in shared mobility: Blablacar Daily.

Carpooling thus reduces the number of cars on the road for a given trip.

Thanks to the BlaBlaCar Daily application, we are able to offer our employees the possibility of commuting between Group sites, to make their daily lives easier and to adopt a more responsible approach.
